For those of you that didn’t attend May’s Alive After Five event, we had a booth to showcase our Choices Care Services for Seniors. Choices Care Services is a non-medical in-home care assistance for seniors. Some of the services provided are:

Meal preparation
Laundry
Cleaning

Companionship
Shopping

The great thing about Choices Care Services is you decide how much help you need. We offer hourly options from as little as 2 hours a week all the way up to 24/7 care.

We’ve Sold Our East Main Street Office

E-Main has been sold! Lewiston sold the E-main building where the community living services programs was provided. When I became president a few years ago my goal was always to combine buildings between E-main and Snake River. The E-Main building was always too small and the Snake River building was too large. Due to the budget cuts OUI decided it was time to take action. Both building’s went up for sale and we would find a building to accommodate the two. After several months we had an offer for the E-main building and the Board accepted it. After moving it was determined that the Snake River Building was perfect for both. Now, all the E-main folks are now at the Snake River building. The move happened at the end of March. There was a lot of help from everyone. And after a couple of weeks the transition is running smoothly. I am so glad to see all the people again on a daily basis.

Now Selling Bird Feeders

Come check out the bird feeders! Our newest addition to the thrift store.Our unique feeders are made out of old plates, bowls and dishes. Participants make them with assistance with staff. Each feeder helps keep our folks at our sheltered workshop learn more skills. Each feeder holds a quart of feed. Prices range from $19.99 to $24.99. Prices are based on size and uniqueness. You can’t buy them for that price anywhere else!.

Medicaid Matters

OUI hosted two Medicaid Matters in Idaho Rallies. Both were held on February 19, 2011; one in Lewiston, and the other in Moscow. Statewide a total of 17 rallies occurred on 2/19/11. These rallies were intended to raise public awareness and call individuals to action to contact Governor Otter, State Senators and legislators and let them know what they thought about the proposed Medicaid cuts..

The cuts were directed at Idaho’s most vulnerable residents; elderly, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill adults and children. Those who often lacked the ability to speak up for themselves. During the rally it was explained how cost ineffective and economically detrimental these cuts really are. Of course the greatest loss is for our elderly, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill adults and children in Idaho. With these cuts many will likely end up losing their independence and be forced into institutions, hospitalized, or incarcerated. This will destroy any savings Governor Otter hoped to see. Not to mention up to 4,000 jobs will be lost placing many on unemployment and other services like, food stamps, etc.

There was a good deal of media coverage and many Senators and Legislators did listen and some changes were made to the worst of the proposals which was a small victory. Unfortunately, several severe cuts remain which adversely affect developmental therapy services for adults and children in Idaho. It is important that all year long we stay actively in contact with our government representatives sending the message for those who can’t speak for themselves.
